Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in First Speech
On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The young figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:
- Free childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past comments.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
